Emerging Australian artist Adrian Smith (b. 1987) works across a variety of media but is best known for using oil on canvas. Often working on a large scale, his work operates in the gap between gestural abstraction and abstract expressionism, evident by the bold, gestural brushstrokes and dripping paint that exist and thrive on his canvas. Smith believes that “making marks subconsciously is the best way to create work of feeling and expression” and that his work reflects the dialogue between the artists consciousness and reality. Smith works vigorously with confidence, constantly re-evaluating and responding to colour, form, and composition, in this way he is able to discard elements that displease him.
